The Radiant Heat Experiment – Did it Work?

Fall snow mantles the crest of the Sweetwater Mountains. As talk of rich strikes at Virginia City, Bodie and Aurora spread, adventurous prospectors from California’s Gold Country flocked to the Eastern Sierra and high desert. These mineralized mountains skirted California’s Bridgeport Valley, the Antelope Valley, and Nevada’s bustling “Esmeralda” mining district. California’s Gold Country crept from the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valley floors to approximately 5, foot elevation on the west side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By contrast, the Sweetwater’s riches nestled beneath high peaks — more like the legendary mines of Colorado. Mining camps like Star City and Belfort rested between 10, and 11, feet. Even Virginia City, notorious for its harsh winters, stood at a mere 6, foot elevation, and Bodie lay at 8, feet.

Starting with a powerful ProStar engine, tuned to produce a class-leading 82 horsepower. This unmatched power is put to work with an all-new clutch and redesigned driveline. The Polaris-designed, large-ratio clutch provides unmatched, low-speed drivability and features the strongest belt ever offered on RANGER. Additionally, redesigned under-hood air intakes and a new clutch cover provide increased air flow for cooler, longer-lasting belt life. Improved driveline geometry produces less friction for increased efficiency and a quieter ride.

The new chassis increases stiffness and reduces flex for a stronger, more durable machine and improved ride.

Radiation design by CGI mesh modeling. Should illustrate the point nicely! I should suggest this to the good people making Kerbal. Could be a cool part of the design experience for nuclear spacecraft. I’ve found that a smaller shadow shield diameter is possible by adding truss segments between the shadow shield and the aft end of the radiator panels. Because the truss is lighter than the shadow shield, you realize a mass savings.

He is also using Blender 3D. Click for larger image, and to read William Black’s detailed analysis and work logs on the project. Dogmatic Pyrrhonist and I both set about individually setting up a radiation simulation by CG lighting; his results are to be found at links in this thread November 6, Initially, for purposes of approximation, I used a cone, which you strip out of the scene once it has served its purpose, this is used to insure the radiators panels and everything else forward of the shadow shield are completely within the shadow region.

It is a matter of placing the cone so to intersect the aft-most edge of the radiation shadow shield, if all components forward of the shadow shield are properly placed nothing should protrude through the surface of the cone. I realized the technique can be used not only to optimize the shadow shield in terms of placement, but also in terms of diameter.

Obviously there are a bunch of factors to weigh when choosing the right rig, and a balance to achieve in weight vs. But for the most part, big miles equal big bikes with tons of space and amenities. While custom baggers are in the very popular sweet spot right now, heavy tourers are also getting their share of love, and new models are coming out yearly. While the Tour might seem to infringe on territory reserved for the Vision, its more traditional styling is made to appeal to those turned off by the space-agey Vision.

We all know what the most important thing is on a touring bike, right? These days, a bike lives and dies by its electronics. All of these contenders are equipped with a sound system, cruise control, and ABS, but beyond that levels of equipment varied greatly. The Kawasaki brings up the rear on standard gizmos, with just a two-speaker radio residing in the fairing.

The Vulcan also had a slew of left-right switches to control not-so-many features, which can be confusing and uses up a lot of real estate on the dash. The Victory Cross Country Tour, on the other hand, has a compact digital display that gives all sorts of information, and is controlled by a single button behind the left control cluster. The usual dual tripmeters and range calculator are joined by a clock, timer, average and instant mileage, average speed, air temp thermometer, and more.

The low fuel warning was occasionally a little paranoid, going off once when there were still 2 gallons left. Uniquely, it comes with a standard iPod hook-up in the left fairing lower compartment, while also sporting heated seats and grips. The audio system is nice, and has just been upgraded to surround sound, and even has an adjustable speed-volume adjustment as does the Harley.

If you turn the key on and let the bike set for 5 or 10 minutes I presume that you don’t blow the fuse.

You have not said if you have a switch on the HS line after the fuse. Which means that the HS will run all the time when the key is on. There is another aux line there in the same area that you can use. It has a white plug on the end. This plug has a tit on it that is clipped to a metal bracket that holds the wire in place. I used this wire to feed the new accessory plug that I added on the right side of the dash like the one on the left side of the dash.

We tried to slap armor plate to stop bullets on civilian wheeled motor cars and they got stuck and easily shot up in muddy trenches. Combat Engineers “Sappers” with the help of visionary civilian leader, Winston Churchill responded by creating tracked tanks to cross over muddy trenches with armored bodies to protect men from enemy bullets and high explosive shell bursts. After the war, however with no civilian functional counterpart to the tank, Combat Engineers no longer were in charge of tank development to insure their designs overcame enemy weapons and obstacles.

Instead, tanks were developed by civilians who wanted speed on roads, comfort, ease of maintenance mimicking the civilian automobile which does not have enemies trying to kill the people inside. Disaster after disaster followed in World War 2, which after great human costs we were lucky to have finally won.

The system is smart enough to monitor critical driver and vehicle inputs times per second, is capable enough to continuously adjust each individual shock on-the-fly, and is so dynamic that instead of having to choose between a plush ride or performance, occupants now get the best of both every time they ride. Whether the vehicle is cornering, braking, accelerating, changing speeds or airborne, the system adjusts the suspension for the best response to driver inputs and terrain.

These continuous changes give riders more performance without sacrificing a comfortable ride. The glove-touch, weather-resistant, 7-inch display indicates the suspension control system status — including compression dampening, selected mode, g-force, pedal position, steering angle, brake status and diagnostics — allowing riders to visualize the real-time control.
